The sexy little details that make or break a porn film…

When I visited the set of Petra’s latest shoot (the hot genderfuck scene that has been selected to premiere at the Berlin Pornfilmfest in October – check out the report from the day if you haven’t already! One of the things that struck me was her attention to the sexy little details.

During the pre-sex shots, when Petra was building atmosphere and showing the chemistry between the two characters, she paid a lot of attention to things I would otherwise have missed. For instance, a shot of Bishop Black getting ready, with creamy white pearls rippling down his gorgeous dark skin – there were a few retakes of this moment to get the detail exactly right. I wondered why Petra shot so many retakes of this shot and she explained: “This is not just a shot of someone putting on a pearl necklace but a super close up shot showing Bishop’s skin being caressed by the pearls rippling across his collarbone at just the right speed and shape to make it a sensual shot that builds anticipation for my audience. These kind of non explicit yet highly erotic shots have become a hallmark of my films that like to appeal to that big sex organ between our ears…

It made me think about all the sexy details that add the icing on the cake to a sex scene. When we talk about what’s hot, it’s often tempting to think of particular acts: whether you like threesome or group scenes, for instance, or something with a bit of BDSM, or oral sex. But sometimes the things that give you that kick of lust are the little extra details. Petra and I asked people on facebook and Twitter for their favourite sexy twists – those gorgeous extra elements of a scene that elevate it from ‘hot’ to ‘smoking.’ Here are a few of them:

Gregory on Facebook mentioned two things that are close to my own heart:

“People I find attractive who are really into each other and are obviously enjoying the experience. And female pleasure and agency.”

Female pleasure and agency? I can’t think of a better example than the amazing scene between Cora Emens and Serj in (S)he Comes. But you tend to find in all of Petra’s films who are really into each other: that’s what comes from casting only performers who have a genuine chemistry with each other and also from Petra putting the emphasis on authentic pleasure and enjoyment rather than fulfilling a tickbox list of sex acts.

Sophie talked in her Facebook comment about intimacy:

“For me it’s eye contact and anything intimate. Kissing with hands around the face, holding hands, entwined fingers. I saw a photo of people eating sushi off a woman’s body recently and was a bit ‘meh’ – until I saw the fingers of someone’s hand grazing her palm. That turned it into something beautiful – because it was such a private moment and it felt like I was the only other person who had seen it.”

Mark agreed, mentioning “seductive kissing and touching”, and over on Twitter @hurricane_ros had similar ideas: “Pausing when kissing when their lips are only just apart, just to catch their breath.” Other suggestions included dirty talk, hair-pulling, and enthusiasm.

I love all of these suggestions – dirty talk is definitely high on my own list, and genuine, free-flowing enthusiasm is off the scale, as opposed to fake orgasms where someone tells you “I’m gonna come, I’m gonna come” when they look like they’re miles from climax. No matter what people are doing in a scene, from kissing to group sex, the most erotic thing in my opinion is the desperate, breathless enthusiasm that happens when you really fancy someone. I think that’s one of the things that made the scene between Bishop Black and Harry so special: they were both incredibly into each other, having been very keen to to play with each other and shoot with Petra way before they even arrived on set, when they started playing, they leapt into it with such passion it took my breath away.

I’d also add male faces – that’s one of my favourite extra elements, which is sadly missing from a lot of ‘mainstream’ porn, but which Petra features in abundance. Wolf Hudson’s solo masturbation scene in (S)he Comes, where he performs to camera and shows off his gorgeous ‘O-face’, has me utterly weak at the knees.

Petra also curates porn from other filmmakers and runs an award for first time female filmmakers, so I wondered what in her eyes makes exciting, hot porn?

“To me porn is hot when it is full of surprises and the sexual acts don’t happen in the usual order we have been shown over and over again by mainstream porn (blowjob, vaginal, anal, cum shot in the face). I like to be surprised by what happens next and enjoy adding a twist to my stories for example in “Room Service” (from “A Taste of Joy” when we believe we view a romantic couple have passionate sex and then in the final shot we see that she pays him for his services. Humour is hot too. Rather than taking sex and porn very seriously and putting on a strained performance for the camera, there is room for laughter and playfulness on my sets.”

How about you? Is there a particular detail that will make or break a porn scene for you? Have a browse through the trailers of Petra’s films, and let us know in the comments which details stand out…
